  21. SafetyBoot is not public domain software, nor is it free software.
  22. SafetyBoot is copyrighted by Cam Belgium and Pascal FUKS, and any
  23. unauthorized use or use inconsistent with the terms of this license is an
  24. infringement of the copyright.

  26. SafetyBoot may be used without registration on a 21-day trial basis for the
  27. purpose of determining whether SafetyBoot is suitable for your needs. The use
  28. of SafetyBoot, except for the initial 21-day trial, requires registration.
  29. Beyond the 21-day trial period, the use of unlicensed copies of SafetyBoot
  30. by any person, business, corporation, government agency, or any other entity
  31. is strictly prohibited. After th 21-day trial period, you must either
  32. register the software, or uninstall and erase it.

  34. A single user license permits a user to use SafetyBoot only on a single
  35. computer. A purchaser of a single user license may not use the program on
  36. different computers, even if he doesn't use it at the same time.

  38. No one may modify or patch the SafetyBoot executable files in any way,
  39. including but not limited to decompiling, desassembling, or otherwise reverse
  40. engineering the program.

  42. A limited license is granted to copy and distribute SafetyBoot only for the
  43. trial use of others, subject to the above limitations and also the following:
  44. 1.    SafetyBoot must be copied in unmodified form, complete with all
  45.     accompanying files, documentation, order forms and this license
  46.     information.

  48. 2.    SafetyBoot may not be distributed in conjunction with any other
  49.     product without a specific license to do so from Cam Belgium.

  51. 3.    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or accepted,
  52.     except as authorized below:

  54.     *    Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  55.         may make any shareware version of SafetyBoot available for
  56.         downloading only as long as the above conditions are met.
  57.         An overall or time-dependant charge for the use of the
  58.         bulletin board system is permitted as long as there is not a
  59.         specific charge for the download of SafetyBoot.

  61.     *    Vendors of user-supported or shareware software may distribute
  62.         only the most current shareware version of SafetyBoot without
  63.         specific permission, subject to the above conditions. It is
  64.         the responsibility of the vendor to obtain the latest
  65.         shareware version. Vendors may charge a disk duplication and
  66.         handling fee.

  69. Introduction
  70.  
  71. SafetyBoot protects you against unauthorized access to your data and your
  72. computer. When SafetyBoot is installed on your computer, nobody can start it
  73. without entering a password. Even if your computer is started with a bootable
  74. floppy, the C: drive remains inaccessible.
  75.  
  76. The program is even necessary for people having computers with power-on
  77. password, as this paasword does not protect your disk against :
  78.     *    a failure of the CMOS Ram,
  79.     *    a failure of the CMOS Ram battery
  80.     *    a stolen disk installed in another computer
  81.  
  82. SafetyBoot is installed with two passwords:
  83.     *    a user password,
  84.     *    a system administrator password
  85.  
  86. This mechanism makes possible :
  87.  -    For large organizations - Set the same system administrator password
  88.     on all the computers, while having an individual password on a
  89.     "per user" basis for each computer.
  90.  -     For individuals - This system makes possible to store two passwords
  91.     in the same machine, which leaves a second chance in the case of a
  92.     forgotten one.

  94. Unlike other disk locking softwares, SafetyBoot's passwords are stored in a
  95. way which makes possible to type them from DOS with a special KEYB XX (for a
  96. non QWERTY keyboard) loaded and enter them by typing exactly the same keys to
  97. start the computer. As the passwords are stored encrypted on the disk, even
  98. an experienced hacker will have a few chances to discover it. For this reason,
  99. there's no program available at this time to display the passwords stored on
  100. disk. If the demand is sufficient, the author can develop such a program.

  102. The installation process is very simple, and will prompt you for the initial
  103. system and user passwords. It will automatically save a special file wich
  104. will allow you to uninstall the software as needed.
  105.  
  106. There's also a special utility to change either the user password, either
  107. the system administrator's one.

  110. (-)    The program will work with all version of Windows, but if you did'nt
  111.     registrate, you can't use the 32 bit access feature wich requires a
  112.     special device driver in CONFIG.SYS.
  113. (-)    This program is compatible with all version of dos starting at version
  114.     3.2.
  115. (-)    The program is not compatible with the Dual OS Loader from Windows NT.
  116. (-)    The program uses 1K of conventional memory.

  124. Installation
  125. ------------

  127. Perequisites.
  128. Before installing SafetyBoot , you will need the following:
  129.     *    A formatted diskette with at least 1024 bytes available on
  130.         it (with no SBSAVE.PTN file).
  131.  
  132.     *    The installation program.
  133.

  136. * W A R N I N G *    You have to remove any Anti-Virus protecting your boot
  137. *               *    sector prior installing SafetyBoot. Some anti-virus
  138. *****************    will report erroneously a virus in boot sector.

  140. Installation step by step
  141.  
  142. SafetyBoot installation process is very simple, and will guide you untill
  143. software is installed.
  144.  
  145. 1.    Log in into the drive and directory where SBINSTAL.EXE is located
  146.     (we will assume this is root directory of drive A:) by typing
  147.     A: <ENTER>
  148.  
  149. 2.    Type SBINSTAL <ENTER>
  150.  
  151. 3.    An initial screen presenting the program will be displayed, and you
  152.     will have to type a key to continue.
  153.  
  154. 4.    The program will test if SafetyBoot is currently installed on your
  155.     computer. If it detects an installed version of SafetyBoot , it will
  156.     display an error window saying:
  157.         Safety Boot already installed.
  158.     and wait for a key press.
  159.  
  160. 5.    If the program is not already installed, the following message will be
  161.     written on your screen:
  162.         Ready to install Safety Boot On disk C:
  163.         Insert a diskette in any drive.
  164.         SBINSTAL will check for drive A:, then drive B:.
  165.         So if you want to use B: drive, remove any floppy from A:
  166.         Press Enter to continue, ESC to cancel.
  167.     SafetyBoot installation process writes a special file called
  168.     SBSAVE.PTN(1) in two places:
  169.     1) the root directory of C: (hidden, system, and read only file)
  170.     2) a diskette.
  171.  
  172.     As SBINSTAL test for the presence of a diskette, first in A:, second
  173.     in B:, if you want this special file on B:, you will need to remove
  174.     any diskette from A:
  175.

  178. * W A R N I N G *    if everything is correct (no previous installation,
  179. *               *    no SBSAVE.PTN on floppy, ...), this is your last
  180. *****************    chance to cancel the installation.
  181. _____________________________________________________________________________
  182. 1SBSAVE.PTN is written on the floppy at each installation. If you want to
  183. use the same diskette for the installation on more than one computer, you
  184. will have to rename it at the end of the installation process. Try to rename
  185. it in way that makes possible for you to remeber which file is from which
  186. computer (e.g. USER's NAME, PC Serial Number, or location...)

  190. 6.    If SBINSTAL can't find a diskette in any drive, it will display an
  191.     error window saying:
  192.         No diskettes in drives...
  193.     And it will restart at point (5)
  194.  
  195. 8.    If SBINSTAL detects a file called SBSAVE.PTN (see 1) on diskette,
  196.     you will see an error window with the following message:
  197.         File SBSAVE.PTN already exist !
  198.     and you will have to press any key. Then you will be back to the Dos
  199.     prompt.
  200.  
  201. 9.    If SBINSTAL detects a previous installation, which was removed from
  202.     the floppy, it will display a warning window with the following
  203.     message:
  204.         A previous installation of SafetyBoot was detected on drive C:
  205.     press a key, the the program asks you:
  206.         Do you want to overwrite it? (Y/N)
  207.     press Y or N; if you press N, you'll be back at DOS prompt.
  208.  
  209. 10.    Then the program will try to create SBSAVE.PTN on diskette and C:, then
  210.     it will write the uninstall informations in it. If at any stage in
  211.     this process, SBINSTALL suspect an error, it will diwplay an error
  212.     window, wait for a keypress and return you to DOS.
  213.  
  214. 11.    If everything is correct till now, the program will prompt you to type
  215.     the user's password :
  216.         Type User Password :
  217.     type it (maximum 10 characters) and end it with <ENTER>
  218.     Then SBINSTAL asks you to retype the password :
  219.         Retype Password :
  220.     again type it. if the passwords don't match, you'll be back at (11)
  221.  
  222. 12.    Then you will be prompted for the system administrator password:
  223.         Type System Password :
  224.     The same procedure as for the user's password will be used.
  225.  
  226. 13.    Once it is done, the program will install SafetyBoot on your hard
  227.     disk, if it detects no error, you will be brought back to DOS.
  228.  
  229. That's all, SafetyBoot is installed, you can restart your computer to test it.

  236. SBCHANGE
  237. --------
  238.  
  239. Introduction
  240. This program allows you to change the SafetyBoot 's passwords. This program
  241. can be started in two modes :
  242.     *    Normal mode
  243.     *    System administrator mode
  244. If you started the program in System Administrator mode,
  245. you'll have the choice of changing either the user's password, either the
  246. System password. In normal mode, you can only change the user's password.
  247.  
  248. Perequisites
  249. You must have a valid installed version of SafetyBoot installed on your C:
  250. drive, and the SBCHANGE utility must be in a directory which is in your PATH,
  251. or in the current directory of the current drive.
  252. If SBCHANGE is not installed, you will get an error message.
  253.  
  254. Usage
  255. The syntax of SBCHANGE is the following :
  256.     SBCHANGE [S]
  257.  
  258. If you start SBCHANGE with no parameter, you will be prompted for the old
  259. user's password. If you make an error in the password, you'll get an error
  260. message, and are back to DOS.
  261. If password is correct, you'll have to type the new one twice for verification
  262. purposes. If the two passwords are the sme, the old password will be replaced.
  263. If not, you'll get an error message and are back to DOS.
  264.  
  265. If you start SBCHANGE with the "S" option, you'll have to type the System
  266. administrator's password. Then, you will have a small menu where you can
  267. choose :
  268.     [1] change user password.
  269.     [2] change system password.
  270.     [0] Exit program.
  271.  
  272. If you choose 1 or 2, you will have to type the new password twice (for
  273. verification purposes). If the passwords don't match, you'll get an error
  274. message, and you're back to DOS.
  275.  
  276. SBREMOVE
  277. --------
  278. This utility lets you remove SafetyBoot  from your hard disk. You need to
  279. start it either from a directory where resides a valid SBSAVE.PTN file for
  280. this computer, either from anywhere providing you have SBSAVE.PTN (Hidden,
  281. System, Read Only) in your root directory of C:.
  282.  
  283. After typing SBREMOVE <ENTER>, the program is removed from your hard disk.
